@GottaLaff @_L1vY_ The Colombian government states it has received guarantees of dignified transport and handling of its citizens, one of President Petro’s conditions. It is not clear if Colombia compromised to accept delivery via military planes. #colombia
@Pachacutec @GottaLaff @_L1vY_
I was guessing someone caved, but I'm not sure anyone will admit to who it was.
I'm looking at reactions in Spanish and English on both sides, and it looks like, in exchange for guarantees from the US not to place Colombian citizens in chains and to guarantee their safe physical treatment, #Colombia will continue as it has for years in accepting deportations, including it seems, for the first time, via military transport.
@Pachacutec @GottaLaff @_L1vY_
Ah I see. so, trump's efforts to impose humiliation on the deportees was too much for Columbia.
Agreeing to cut that out was enough for them?
@alienghic @GottaLaff @_L1vY_
That was always the objection according to Petro's tweet this morning, where he retweeted video of the delivery of Brazilian citizens in chains. Accepting deported people was never the issue, but the protection of their human rights. He did also object to military transport, as that is outside of norms and a lack of respect for national sovereignty. It seems there may be some compromise there. #Colombia
@alienghic @GottaLaff @_L1vY_ Petro’s statement this morning: #Colombia 1/2
A migrant is not a criminal and must be treated with the dignity that a human being deserves.
That is why I turned back the US military planes that were carrying Colombian migrants.
I cannot make the migrants stay in a country that does not want them; but if that country turns them back it must be with dignity and respect for them and for our country.
2/2
“We will receive our fellow citizens on civilian planes, without treating them like criminals. Colombia is respected.”
@Pachacutec @GottaLaff @_L1vY_
Nice of a leader to care about the dignity of their citizens.
Must be nice.
@GottaLaff @alienghic @_L1vY_
This BBC article is rewriting the US press release. It omits that #Colombia obtained agreement from the US to ensure that deported citizens are transported safely, not in chains, with respect for their bodies, dignity and human rights. This was President Petro's core demand.
Western media is at this point consistently framing the agreement as a unilateral concession by #Colombia and that is false.
@Pachacutec I appreciate that. I’ll add it to the thread. @alienghic @_L1vY_

With a few exceptions American Media has crawled under Trump's desk.
@BagOfNails @Pachacutec @GottaLaff @_L1vY_
I believe the US media had been slowly going bankrupt due to Facebook and google eating all theirnad revenue.
Once enough competitors died off the super rich bought up the remaining news sites and did many rounds of layoffs.
Now they can dictate coverage and I believe the rich hated biden for his support of unions and wanted trump for his promises of tax cuts.
I think a bign reason the democrats lost the election was the bias in media and manipulation campaigns on social media.
@alienghic @BagOfNails @Pachacutec @GottaLaff @_L1vY_
In Canada Meta directly attacked the revenues of traditional news media by banning them off their platform in order to avoid paying them any kickbacks, when the government tried to balance the field a little by essentially guaranteeing them some per-click revenue. They are going after the competition, and in Canada they're doing it in the most direct way possible.
"Este artículo de la BBC reescribe el comunicado de prensa de EE. UU. Omite que #Colombia obtuvo el acuerdo de EE. UU. para garantizar que los ciudadanos deportados sean transportados de manera segura, no encadenados, con respeto por sus cuerpos, dignidad y derechos humanos. Esta fue la demanda principal del presidente Petro.
En este momento, los medios occidentales están enmarcando constantemente el acuerdo como una concesión unilateral de #Colombia y eso es falso.
Sadly the Beeb no longer seem to give a damn about actual journalism anymore. Redrafting a press release appears to be about their limit these days.
@bytebro @Pachacutec @GottaLaff @_L1vY_
US oligarchs unfortunately have too much ability to mess with the UK government.
And the super rich have also been trying to degrade the UKs access to information too.
@Pachacutec @GottaLaff @alienghic @_L1vY_
That has been my take as well but it took gleaning tiny bits from multiple news sources.
There still hasn't been a real report on what the deportations will look like going forward.
The main issue was treatment of migrants as criminals in chains. It seems like the US agreed to stop that but still use military planes.
So a compromise by both parties, not a concession by Colombia.
But media only reports the bombastic press releases from the WH.
@squared99 @GottaLaff @alienghic @_L1vY_
Yes.
Minor request: please correct the spelling of #Colombia if you don't mind.
@Pachacutec Done. Thank you.
@squared99 @Pachacutec @GottaLaff @alienghic @_L1vY_
Do you have a source for the US agreeing to terms of dignity and respect?
None of the mainstream news are mentioning this.
@leighms @squared99 @GottaLaff @alienghic @_L1vY_
No english language sources acknowledge it that I can find. #colombia
Here's a video in Spanish that includes the live announcement of the Colombian government.
This Colombia vlogger covers it. I will follow up with my own quick translation of the government statement.
@leighms @squared99 @GottaLaff @alienghic @_L1vY_
"Official Communication: The Colombian government announces that it has overcome the impasse with the US government.
In this context, Counselor Luis Hilberto Murillo and Embassador Daniel García Peña will travel to Washington DC in the next few days to participate in high level meetings that will continue to advance the agreements resulting from the joint work of diplomatic exchanges between the two governments. . .
@leighms @squared99 @GottaLaff @alienghic @_L1vY_
[. . . We will continue receiving Colombian men and women that are returned as deportees under guaranteed conditions of dignity as citizens who are accorded rights.
The Colombian government under the the direction of President Gustavo Petro has made available the presidential plane to facilitate the return of its citizens that were to arrive here in Colombia this morning in deportation planes.. . .
@leighms @squared99 @GottaLaff @alienghic @_L1vY_
[. . . Colombia ratifies that it will maintain diplomatic relations and dialogue to guarantee the rights, the national interests, and the dignity of our citizens.
Thank you very much."
I have not seen a single English language news source report this statement.
@Pachacutec @leighms @squared99 @GottaLaff @alienghic @_L1vY_ And it means that Colombia hasn’t “caved in” to Trump’s demands as he claimed.
So why no honest coverage? Huh? No followup? You call yourself journalists?
@bouriquet @Pachacutec @leighms @squared99 @GottaLaff @_L1vY_
Remember large chunks of the US media went bankrupt after the rise of google/facebook and what's left that you've heard of has all been bought by right-wing billionaires.
@alienghic @Pachacutec @leighms @squared99 @GottaLaff @_L1vY_ True, print media is obsolete and their transition to the web is inconsistent. The large TV networks are no longer independent and controlled by their corporate oligarchs. PBS is gradually being strangled fiscally. The BBC has lost its independence even if it always had a British slant
@leighms @squared99 @GottaLaff @alienghic @_L1vY_
January 27, 2025 3:56 pm EST UPDATE
Spanish language news outlets Noticias RCN and W Radio Colombia are reporting that Colombia is sending 2 Colombian aircraft to San Diego, California to pick up about 160 deported citizens, the first leaving #Colombia at about 2:10 EST. The flight will include medical doctors to assist those transported.
These people are not being delivered to Colombia in military aircraft.
@Pachacutec @leighms @squared99 @GottaLaff
I hope the US is paying for the flight.
@alienghic @leighms @squared99 @GottaLaff
No reporting on that so far, but I gathered the news from a Colombian vlogger who made the same point.
